The Long Beach Utilities Department is seeking an experienced and collaborative leader to serve as its next Senior Director of Administration/Human Resources. This executive position provides a unique opportunity to guide human resources strategy, organizational development, occupational safety, and administrative operations for one of California’s largest and most respected municipal utility organizations. 

About Long Beach Utilities 

For more than a century, Long Beach Utilities has provided water, natural gas, and sewer services to the communities of Long Beach and Signal Hill. Governed by an appointed Board of Public Utilities Commissioners, the department serves nearly 500,000 residents and is supported by approximately 525 employees across more than 100 classifications.

About the Position 

Reporting to the Assistant General Manager, the Senior Director of Administration/Human Resources provides strategic leadership for Human Resources, Safety Programs, and Personnel, Policies, and Procedures. 

The full-time, unclassified position oversees a team of 16 professionals and plays a key role in workforce planning, labor relations, employee engagement, occupational safety, organizational development, and regulatory compliance. The successful candidate will partner with executive leadership to support both day-to-day operations and long-term organizational priorities. 

The ideal candidate is a strategic and emotionally intelligent leader with extensive public sector human resources experience. They will bring expertise in labor relations, organizational development, employee relations, occupational safety, and change management, along with a demonstrated ability to build strong relationships across all levels of an organization. 

Successful candidates will be collaborative, politically astute, customer-service oriented, and committed to fostering a positive and accountable workplace culture. 

Compensation and Benefits 

The annual salary range is $170,352 to $255,025, depending on qualifications and experience.
